Song Writing
Guidelines for Participating in Song Writing:
Each participant will:
- Write an original melody and original lyrics to a spiritually-themed song.
- The melody cannot be borrowed or designated “to be sung to the tune of”; they must be uniquely composed by the student. Musical scoring is not required, but the song must be submitted with a recording of the song.
- Lyrics must be original to the youth participant, but may include the words of Scripture, in part or as the whole song, and using a translation or paraphrase. If Scripture is used, this must be noted on the printed lyrics.
- Harmony is not required, although proper harmonic chords may enhance the composition. Two-part harmony at least is encouraged (but not necessary) for the older grade levels. A composition will not have points deducted for being melody only.
- More than one student may work on a composition, but the song will be judged according to the grade level of the oldest student.
- The song lyrics must be typed on a submission sheet. If scored, provide a printing. Printing, including notation, should be clearly legible. The song must be performed and recorded. Videor recording is not required, but will be accepted.
Award Requirements:
Submissions will be judged by the event director and at least two other reviewers. Each participant must submit one completed judge’s form from a review recruited by themselves. Criteria for Song Writing will include two, equally considered categories, with both categories given 1 to 5 points, with 5 being best:
- Lyrics (sensibility, structure, spirituality)
- Ease of Singing (vocal range, melodic, catchiness)
There are not grade divisions in Song Leading, but the maturity of the student composer will be considered when judging submissions. Awards will be given:
- Gold: a total of 8 or more points
- Silver: a total of 5 or more points
- Bronze: a total of 2 or more points
Submission Protocol:
Submissions of Song Leading entries must include a Pre-Convention Cover Sheet, one completed Song Writing Judge’s Form, a printing of the song lyrics (including the title of the song and composer), a printing of musical scoring (if applicable), and a recording of the song being performed (video submissions are acceptable, but not required). Submissions should be sent to the event director.
