Communion Meditation

Purpose: This event encourages our youth to share a communion meditation to focus our minds upon the importance of the Lord’s Supper.

Process: Each participant will write or record a meditation in preparation for the Lord’s Supper that draws on the LTCSW theme. The church coordinator will submit the finished meditation to the event coordinator who will coordinate judging and assign an award.

Communion Meditation Rules

Guidelines for Participating in Communion Meditation:

Individual participants will write or record a communion meditation related to the LTCSW theme. Meditations must follow these guidelines.

  • The meditation should be between 150-250 words (3rd – 8th grades), or 250-325 words (9th-12th grades). If typed, use size 12-16 font.
  • The meditation should be written to be given orally in preparation for the Lord’s Supper. It may be submitted as a written essay or as a recorded message.
  • The meditation must have at least THREE PARTS: (A) an introductory statement; (B) between 20-75 words of Scripture; and (C) a conclusion. The Scripture citation may appear anywhere in the meditation.
  • The meditation should mention: (A) the death of Christ; (B) the bread, which is His body; and (C) the fruit of the vine, which is His blood.
  • The meditation must include the name of the participant, his/her grade, and the church name at the top right corner of the paper, or spoken at the beginnign of the recording.

 

Judging Criteria:

Communion Meditation submissions will be evaluated by three judges.

  • Evaluations of meditations will be based on the following criteria, using a scale of 100 possible points.
    1. (20 Points) Thesis/Main Point: Is the central idea of the meditation clear? Is the key idea related to the LTCSW theme? Is the main idea compelling and creative?
    2. (20 Points) Organization: Are the main points of the meditation clear, well supported, and logically developed? Does the speaker/writing show transitions between points?
    3. (20 Points) Delivery: If submitted as a video recording, does the speaker make eye content, speak clearly and deliver the meditation well. If written, does the piece show correct grammar and word choice.
    4. (40 Points) Content: Is the material interesting and significant? Is scripture used to support your central idea? Does the meditation keep your attention? Does the content demonstrate particularly good insight?
  • As appropriate, these penalties will be assessed:
    1. -5 Points if submission requirements are not met.
    2. -10 Points if Scripture is not used.
  • As a general rule, awards will be assigned accordingly: GOLD, 95-100 points; SILVER, 85-94 points; BRONZE, 70-84 points; and NO AWARD, 0-69 points.
  • The Event Director reserves the discretion to assign the final award.

 

Submission Protocol:

Submissions of Daily Devotional entries must include a Pre-Convention Cover Sheet. Submissions should be sent to the event director.
