Christian Art

Event Director: Beth Dennison

Purpose: The Christian Art event was developed to encourage communication of the participant’s faith and beliefs through the artistic media of sculpturing, photography, painting, drawing, and design. This is an event for individuals and not teams.

Process: Participants will create a work of art, chosen from among the artistic media of sculpturing, photography, painting, drawing, and design. Participants are limited only by their imagination. Entries should make a clear point and should visually represent the current year’s LTCSW theme. The artwork will be displayed and judged at the convention, with the event director receiving entries, coordinating displays, judging, and the assigning of awards.

Christian Art Rules

Guidelines for Participating in Christian Art:

Participants will create a work of art using the artistic media of sculpturing, photography, painting, drawing, or design that expresses or interprets the LTCSW theme. A participant may submit only one piece of artwork for display and judging at the LTCSW convention. The guidelines given below must be followed.

  • Adult assistance shall be limited to advice and supervision.
  • The participant submitting an entry shall be the sole artist of that entry.
  • The project must be an original work of art. Copying or tracing someone else’s work, even with permission from the original artist or author, is not acceptable. The judges and event director reserve the right to penalize or disqualify a project that is suspected to not be an original artwork.
  • All entries must interpret the current year’s LTCSW theme.
  • Identification: Attach to the back of the entry (the bottom of sculpture entries) one 3X5 index card with the following information:
    • participant’s name

  • Presentation: Sculptures must be self‑supporting, i.e., supported or braced as needed for display. However, sculptures and supports/braces must remain movable. Special lighting will not be permitted.
  • Materials: The use of materials is not restricted, with the understanding that all displays must be in good taste. Event Directors reserve the right to make final decisions in this area.
  • Points will be deducted if size or presentation rules are not followed.

Guidelines for Photography

  • Size: The size of photographs entered shall not exceed 13 x 16 inches, including frame. Smaller entries are permissible.
  • Presentation: Entries shall be framed and self‑supporting, i.e., supported or braced as needed for display. However, frames and supports/braces shall remain movable. Note: LTCSW will not supply easels. Special lighting will not be permitted.
  • Materials: Photographs may be taken in either black and white or color. Each photograph will be judged upon its own merit, regardless of its type.
  • Points will be deducted if size or presentation rules are not followed.

Guidelines for Painting and Drawing

  • Size: The size of paintings or drawings entered, including frames, shall not exceed 16 x 18 inches; smaller entries are permissible.
  • Presentation: Entries shall be framed and self‑supporting, i.e., supported or braced as needed for display. However, frames and supports/braces shall remain movable. Note: LTCSW will not supply easels. Special lighting will not be permitted.
  • Materials: Painting Category can be watercolors, acrylics, oils, etc. Drawing Category can be pen, ink, pencil, crayon, markers, etc. Each entry will be judged upon its own merit, regardless of materials.
  • Points will be deducted if size or presentation rules are not followed.

Guidelines for Design

  • NOTE: Designs can be computer‑generated graphics, free‑standing objects, logo artistry, etc. This category includes all other art not defined in the other three categories.
  • Size: The size of the design must fit in a 12 x 12 inch area (width and height). Smaller entries are permissible.
  • Presentation: Entries must be self‑supporting either by frame or other means. Items must be movable as a single unit and not require assembly/disassembly by the Judges or Event Director. Special lighting is not permitted.

  • Points will be deducted if size or presentation rules are not followed.

Judging Criteria:

Each Christian Art entry will be evaluated by three judges, with two of these evaluations occurring at the LTCSW Convention and one evaluation from a person from the participant’s home congregation.

  • Each Judge will use the following criteria for determining the number of points to award each entry.
    1. (5 Points) Maximum Size (-5 if oversize)
    2. (5 Points) Presentation (-5 if not self supporting/portable/framed)
    3. (20 Points) Theme: Is the current LTCSW theme clearly and easily depicted through the entry itself?
    4. (20 Points) Creativity
    5. (10 Points) Imagination/Aura: Did the artist use imagination to create an overall “aura” for the entry?
    6. (15 Points) Neatness: Does the entry look neat and orderly?
    7. (10 Points) Tools of the Trade: Does the entry show that the artist has the master over the “tools of his trade” in relationship to the age/grade category?
    8. (10 Points) Contrast: Does the entry show the artist has a mastery of contrast (e.g. rough/smooth, light/dark, and focus/periphery) in relationship to the age/grade category?
    9. (5 Points) Support: Does the presentation’s support (braces, base, easel, frame) enhance the overall “impact” of the entry?
  • Awards will be given according to this scale:
    1. Gold = 95 to 100 Points
    2. Silver = 85 to 94 Points
    3. Bronze = 75 to 84 Points
  • An award rating will be assigned based on the point average among the three judges.
  • Each participant must supply one completed judging form with their entry, with their work being evaluated by an adult from their congregation.
  • The Event Director reserves the discretion to assign the final award.
